City of the Arts and the Sciences
The City of the Arts and the Sciences is a great recreational centre for scientific and cultural knowledge.
Located in the old Turia Riverbed near the El Saler Motorway, the City of the Arts and the Sciences occupies an area of approximately 350.000 m2.
It is an international avant-garde architectural masterpiece, and is destined to become a symbol of the 21st century for the city of Valencia and the entire Valencia Community. Two prestigious international architects participated in this great complex: Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. The former designed the Palau de les Arts-where artistic, musical and theatre performances will be held-, L'Hemisferic - with its spectacular shows in the Imax Dome Cinema, Planetarium and Laserium-, the Museu de les Ciències "Príncipe Felipe" -where one can learn about the advances of science and technology in an entertaining way- and the L'Umbracle, a splendid tree and sculpture-lined promenade discretely covering a parking facility with the most impressive views of the complex. Félix Candela is the creator of the exceptional roofs for the main buildings in the L'Oceanogràfic, an underwater city where one can explore the secrets of the depths.
The City of the Arts and the Sciences is the Valencia Regional Government's solid investment in the future, and is the perfect place to have fun while enjoying and learning about Art, Nature, and Science.
Ciudad de las Artes
L'Hemisferic
The building is the work of Santiago Calatrava and is originally designed in the shape of a human eye. It is the only place in Spain where, in the same building and on the same enormous 900m2 concave screen, you can see three audiovisual shows: a planetarium, an IMAX Cinema Dome and an Omniscan Laser. The six channel stereo sound system can be heard in four different languages.
L'Hemisferic
The beauty of the building is rounded off by a 24,000m2 rectangular pond in which you can see the reflection of a complete sphere in the water.
Museum Pricipe Felipe
This is the museum of the 21st century. It is a unique building, designed by Santiago Calatrava, in which to learn about the evolution of life and the latest scientific and technological breakthroughs.
Museo Principe
The building has a personality all of its own and is the impressive result of constructive innovation. It is principally an interactive museum which allows the visitor freedom to change and decide where he or she wants to go in an active, fun and entertaining atmosphere.
Due to the extraordinary size and rigidity of the concrete parts of the building, all the museum's foundations are 30m deep. It is 220m long, 80m wide and 55m tall and represents a new milestone in the history of world architecture.
L'Oceanografic
L'Oceanogràfic
The Oceanographic Park, with more than 30,000 animals, is Europe’s largest seaquarium. L’Oceanogràfic is a unique underwater city where visitors can travel through the seas and oceans of the planet, learning about the behaviour and way of life of over 30,000 animals from 500 different species. The seaquarium was designed not only for leisure and entertainment, but also as an educational and research centre for sea sciences and for the recuperation of protected fauna and flora. The white cement roof of the entrance building and the submarine restaurant –designed by the architect Felix Candela– represent a hyperbolic/parabolic figure, resembling a water lily. Both the inside of the submarine towers –encircled by aquariums–, and the outside –surrounded by beautiful gardens–, with emblematic buildings which seem to emerge from the central pond, are ideal for the celebration of all types of events. Especially worthy of mention are the spectacular Submarine Restaurant and the Auditorium, both with capacity for nearly 400 people.
Art Palace
The Art Palace, a crucial element in the impressive monumental area that offers the City of the Arts and the Sciences, will became one of the most important artistic and cultural infrastructures in the world.
Design as a great forum for the creation, promotion and popularization of all scenic arts, it will benefit for the most advanced technological resources to home any dramatic, operistic or musical event.
The Palace will have three independent spaces: a Main Hall with capacity for 1800 people, dominated by a huge stage suitable for any kind of montage; a Music Chamber with capacity for 400 people, and an open air Auditorium with capacity for 2500 people, located on the upper part and protected by the roof of the building: a true balcony overlooking the Turia bed.
L´Umbracle
L'Umbracle is the portico of entry to the City of the Arts and the Sciences, a green space of free access of 7.000 square meters, 320 meters of length and 60 meters of width. L'Umbracle is shaped by a succession of 55 fixed arches and 54 floating arches of 18 meters of height. On them there will grow climbing plants, which will provide shade along the whole landscaped walk and will give the aspect of the "Winter Garden" to L'Umbracle novecentista.
There is realized with the same constructive materials that they characterize the rest of the buildings, the trencadís and the white concrete principally.
